(2) Obstetrics, gynaecology and reproduction axis, Faculty of Medicine
Sylvie Breton earned her PhD in Biophysics from the Université de Montréal and is currently a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Université Laval as well as an Emeritus Professor at Harvard Medical School. She holds the Canada Research Chair in Epithelial Dynamics of the Kidney and Reproductive Organs.
Research interest
Professor Breton's research focuses on the biology of epithelial cells. Her laboratory has made significant contributions to our understanding of ion transport and immunity in renal and epididymal epithelia. Her work employs advanced microscopy approaches to study the function of epithelial cells in their native environment.
The Breton laboratory has recently demonstrated that epithelial cells in the kidney and epididymis can undertake diverse tasks, including their role as mediators of immunity and inflammation.
The goal of her current research is to address the knowledge gap surrounding this non-traditional role of epithelial cells, which will provide new insights into the diagnosis and treatment of male infertility and kidney diseases in the future.
